MEME: In the Br@zil of Memefication

CURATED BY: @newmemuseum, Clarissa Diniz, and Ismael Monticelli

Banco do Brasil presents and sponsors MEME: In the Br@zil of Memefication. Curated by Clarissa Diniz and Ismael Monticelli, in collaboration with the Instagram account @newmemeseum, this unprecedented exhibition invites visitors to explore memes as an expressive and ironic tool for narrating Brazil.

Bringing together contemporary art, digital culture, and social critique, the exhibition introduces the public to memefication as a form of communication and visual construction. It features established Brazilian artists alongside digital content creators, extending into the virtual space with a series of activations specially designed for online platforms. This approach broadens the exhibition's reach and promotes access for diverse audiences.

Through this project, the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center reaffirms its role as a living space for dialogue with contemporary forms of expression, valuing the critical, affective, and aesthetic power emerging both from the digital networks and the streets—strengthening the connection between Brazilians and culture.

Opening to the public on October 9, 2025, at 7 PM, with visiting hours from October 10, 2025, to April 5, 2026, the exhibition Letras & Filetes: Affective Memory and Latinidades celebrates the vibrant and multicolored universe of hand-painted letters from market posters, truck bodies, and ornamented boats.

Curated by Filipe Grimaldi and Thiago Nevs, the show features works by approximately 60 artists and invites visitors to dive into the popular visual culture of Brazil and countries such as Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru, highlighting knowledge that spans generations.

By honoring characters who often work in anonymity, the exhibition underscores how manual skill and popular creativity have transformed letters, words, and ornaments into expressions of identity through the work of poster artists, lettering specialists, professional sign painters, and master filetadores—whose creations transcend commercial purposes to reveal narratives of belonging, resistance, and collective memory.
